Your tefillin set contains two black leather boxes with straps. The one with four compartments is for the head while the smooth one is for the arm. Take out the one for the arm.

Take out the tefillin from its case.

Put the arm-tefillin on the weaker arm. If you are right-handed, place it on your left arm or on the right if you are left-handed.

Your tefillin set comes with a parchment scroll in Hebrew. Say the blessing in Hebrew if you can read and understand the language. Otherwise, recite it in any language you understand.

The Hebrew text is as follows: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּ֒שָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהָנִיחַ תְּפִלִּין

in english it sounds like:

Baruch atah Ado-nai, Elo-heinu melech ha’olam, asher kideshanu b’mitzvotav, v’tzivanu l’haniach tefillin.

It is translated to this:

Blessed are You, L‑rd our G‑d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to put on tefillin.

While putting both tefillin on, concentrate on connecting your mind, heart, and deeds without talking or even winking. Put your focus on binding your thoughts, feelings, and actions to G-d.

As you are binding the strap around your arm, always make sure that the knot directly touches the box. Next, wrap over the strap socket of the box two times followed by wrapping it around the biceps. Then, wrap the strap around your arm seven times. Finally, wrap around your palm once, letting the remaining part of the strap loose. 

To place the head tefillin, take it out from the plastic wrap. Put the box above your forehead with the knot resting on the base of your skull.

Say the blessing in Hebrew if you can read and understand the language. Otherwise, recite it in any language you understand.

Put yourself in the presence of G-d. 

Tefillin bears four passages from the Bible that state about G-d’ s Unity and the Exodus from Egypt to remind ourselves of the miracles He has done for us. It is also for us to remember His power and dominion over everything.

Furthermore, be aware that G-d has encouraged us to wear the tefillin on our arm close to our heart so that we submit all our heart’s desires to Him, and on the head for us to lift up to Him our conscious soul. Therefore, tefillin serves as the motivation to be of service to G-d and to learn His wisdom through Torah.

Be mindful that tefillin is God’s mitzvah / commandment. It is highly recommended to say the morning prayers with the tefillin on. If unable to recite the entire morning prayers, say the Sherma prayer, at least.

You shall love the L‑rd your G‑d with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them thoroughly to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign upon your arm, and they shall be for a reminder between your eyes. You shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.
